WORLD-CLASS FOLK BALLET FROM KOREA AT
ISTANA BUDAYA
World-class
ballet troupe The Little Angels of South Korea are scheduled to provide
heart-thrusting entertainment at Istana Budaya in Kuala Lumpur for the public from
January 14 to January 17 next year.
With
500 television appearances and more than 50 special performances before heads
of state to their credit, the Little Angels are internationally renowned as
young ambassadors of Korea’s flamboyantly expressive traditional culture of
folks songs, dance, and pulsating drum-and-gong rhythms.
Comprising
mostly girls aged 9 to 15, the troupe counts among its distinctions the opening
ceremony performances at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and the 2002 FIFA World Cup
jointly hosted by Korea and Japan. The troupe has made 55 overseas tours since
its founding in 1962.
The
Little Angels’ tour next January will be their third visit to Malaysia — the
first was in 1974 when they did a royal performance at Istana Malaysia before
the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and Raja Permaisuri Agong, and the second was in 1996
at PWTC Kuala Lumpur for the public.
Few
other folk companies can match the flawless adult professionalism of the Little
Angels, as public feedback indicates after each world tour. Their repertoire is
based on cultural tradition, and steeped in ancient folklore, with many of the
songs and dances dating back 2,000 years. These include stately court dances
and the exuberant prancing in the fields of rural Korea with drums, gongs, and
cymbals played by the dancers themselves.
Net proceeds will go towards a charity beneficiary Ajar-Ajar Malaysia.
